I did not go wrong for these four years, but I think I could have done better if I had acted differently at times.
I hope these tips are useful if you study or intend to study medicine; I have written them with the greatest honesty and sincerity possible.
1. Do not study based on what your classmates say they have studied
How many times have I heard the famous “I have not looked at it” or “I come to try my luck” just before an exam? Then everything is remarkable, excellent and matriculation of honor fallen from the sky.
Study on your own criteria, do not let yourself be influenced by anyone in particular.
2. Do not presume to study medicine
Do you have any reason to do it other than to satisfy your ego?
There is a fundamental difference between pride and ego. The ego is unstable, needs external approval and all you get with it is to look like a worm.
Pride, however, is born from within, represents your values, your ideals, your merits, and build it day by day.
You must be proud to study what you have always wanted, but not for this you need to satisfy your ego by preaching it to the four winds, or as some do, letting it fall like one who does not want the thing.
3. You do not need to go to class to pass or take notes
The first few days, every teacher is a world: some follow what they give in class at the time of the exam, others prefer to invent the agenda with the excuse that we should study the books.
The former is more useful to listen to than the latter.
4. Go to class every day
Yes, the previous point does not contradict this.
I have been a whole semester and part of the next without going to any class. He said that he would study during those hours, but I deceived myself.
The only thing I did was to waste my time: I went to the gym, I walked all the mountains of the Bai Camp by bike, I watched whole seasons of Throne and Breaking Bad, I went through the faculty to greet people … And then, Thursdays and Saturdays, party.
It all ended when one day I looked in the mirror and wondered: where the fuck did this nine come from?
Until the exams do not arrive you live very well as a student, but if you do not attend class and disconnect you may never reconnect and start to shipwreck.
5. If you want to get tuition, start studying before we do the majority
It has no more mystery. Quit strange theory and innate abilities because in the end these are just cheap excuses.
Here there are neither clever nor dumb, here there are lazy and lazy or constant and dedicated.
6. Be honest, but not ignorant.
If you do not know an answer and you can copy it from someone you intuit that does know, copy. In this life not only live of good intentions.
Now, do not win the cop honing fame. We’ve all taken a look at the exam next door, but to a certain extent.
Personally, I do not care if they copied me, but I hate that they abuse or ask me directly (and less if I have not finished the exam).
7. Introduce yourself to each and every one of the exams
I’ve never understood how there are people who do not go to an exam because they “take it wrong”. It is hard to be doing a test and not knowing what to answer, I understand, but it is essential that you attend, know the teacher’s question and memorize the questions so that in recovery you go with lead feet.
And I tell you: you would not be the first to say that he approved because in the end it turns out that he did well or because, alluding to the previous point, he has taken an eye on the next.
8. Not always giving is received, but if they ask you
I mean notes, exams, summaries, etc. You never know when you’ll be in a hurry and you’ll need extra help.
Today for you, tomorrow for me, that is the key to success.
I might have suspended Physiology in second if it had not been for the schemes of my friend Ana, who summarized the whole agenda on a DINA2 sheet.
9. Do not matrices to get an approved (or even a notable)
Medical students were accustomed to getting excellent in high school, but the faculty is another world. You can study a lot and suspend or study little and pass. Nothing happens.
At least in my faculty we have more than 60 subjects throughout the race (and I think I fall short with that number). Quiet that for a 5 you will not tarnish your record if you worry so much.
10. Take with tweezers what you say friends of higher courses
Let me give you a personal example. In my year, on the psychology exam, students were divided into two classes. Those who entered first did so in a class separated by several rows and controlled by a teacher with bad milk. To those we entered later, on the other hand, we had the lottery: the teacher had not booked more classrooms and we were lucky enough to do the exam glued to each other.
If I analyzed it objectively it was a difficult exam (10 written questions from a long program), but I did the exam, literally, next to my roommate. And if we add that the teacher was a good-natured, the result is to do an exam as if we were in a tapas bar: commenting the questions out loud and laughing at the situation in the middle of the exam.
It is possible to say that it has not happened to me again, it was something exceptional that whenever I remember it I enter the laughter. But this condition me to think that the subject of Psychology “was easy,” at least for me.
I doubt that the other classmates think the same
11. Hatters going to hate
In Spain the national sports are the marquee and the criticism of others; I think I would not be wrong if I said that in your faculty as well.
Whenever you do something new or different you will be criticized, but do not stop doing it.
Although I bring good news: there are also great people who support you and believe in what you do, focus on them. Apply this to all the terrains of your university life and you will do well.
12. Medicine should occupy an important place in your life.
Not everything in this life is medicine, but you must remember that you have entered this race to be a doctor, do not lose the north.
I do not know about you, but the tuition in Catalonia is not cheap, and that my university is public. So focus and leave all your mental rolls for after the exams, what time there will be.
13. Competitiveness will always be present
In some faculties it is more blatant, in others it is necessary to read it between the lines. But I repeat: it will always be there.
They may tell you subtly “I’ll pass the notes” and you’ll be waiting for them for life. Maybe when the notes come out, compare yours with yours. Or they simply self-cite for not having reached the excellent.
Attitudes that rub the ridiculous if you think of the values that a doctor is supposed to have.
14. Do not tell everyone what you’ve taken on a test
If they ask you, just tell me whether you have done well or not. Discuss your notes with your family and, if you want, with the closest friends, but do not preach them right and wrong.
Do not enter the game of competitiveness because the main affected will be you.
15. Empathize with your peers, not just the patients
By this I mean celebrating good academic results when a classmate has suspended or not gone as he would want.
Each one free to do what I want and surely there are opinions found in this section, but I, out of respect and education, in this case I do not celebrate my grades. Or at least I do not manifest my extreme joy in front of that person. More than anything because I would not want them to do it to me.
What we hate most when we suffer defeat in any arena is that we rub off the victories of others, either directly or indirectly.
